May 26th

During the First World War, poppies flourished in Europe.  Following the publication of “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, M.D., the red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle.  In the 1920s, Congress adopted the poppy as the official symbol of Memorial Day when we remember the men and women who made the supreme sacrifice for our freedom.

We have purchased 200 poppies from our local VFW.  Tomorrow morning everyone who attends worship will receive a poppy to commemorate this sacred weekend.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

Our choir has a powerful anthem, “Song for the Unsung Hero.”  The anthem will follow my sermon in which I will tell a story about an unsung hero—a story that has become very personal for me.

We will recognize all of our veterans and service personnel in the service.  One of our veterans, Dan Hopkins, will be reading our Scripture from John 15 and Joshua 1.

We are very excited about welcoming Krystal Craven as our new Martha Best Children’s Center Director.  During the past five months our Children’s Center has remained open and continued to operate without a director due to the faithful and competent leadership of four special individuals:  Jim Tate, Jean Ashley, Julia Dunn, and Eryn Myers.  All four have given countless hours of their time and talents in leading our Children’s Center.  They have done this without any expectation of remuneration and have stated that they do not want anything in return.  This has been done out of their love for children, our church, and the Lord.

However, our deacons feel that their service has gone way above and beyond normal expectations.  Therefore, we are receiving a love offering during the month of June that will be divided as a gift of love and appreciation for our Transition Team.  Please earmark checks to the MBCC Team.

This is the last call for tickets to the Winston-Salem Dash game on June 14.  Your all-inclusive ticket includes grandstand seating, all of your food, and fireworks at the conclusion of the game.  It is a great deal for a fun-filled night of fellowship, baseball, entertainment, and great food.  The discounted ticket price is only $15.  Over 40 are planning to attend. Please let us know no later than Tuesday of this week if you would like tickets.

Parents, mark your calendars for Sunday, June 9.  There will be a special celebration for our children during the Sunday School hour.  More details will be shared later.

We are updating our membership database.  Our last pictorial directory is 7 years old.  Many things have changed since then.  Please let us know if there has been a change in your email, telephone, or address.

July is the next month when we will partner with Grace Episcopal to provide lunch for the needy on Sundays.  Please let Jen Fuller-Allen know if you can help.
